Get acquainted with New House

It's about information that you should stay in the new house for few days before you actually start planning the interiors and furnishing. That way you may change the total plan and add new things - which you might have thought earlier.

Color Qualities

It is about the colors and their nature, impact on us and our reactions to colors!

First get acquainted with the new house.

Whenever you start constructing a new house or remodeling a house or buying a new or old house (whether it is an apartment or individual house) the agents of furniture and furnishing retailers will come and canvas for the products.  The designer or the interior specialist may also chip in to recommend the variety of furniture and aesthetic color scheme for your different rooms.

After observing many house owners and office managers - in different locations and regions, it is noted that one has to take the note of the environment and its natural effects on the house for few days - so that you will know which side gives you the good natural light and from which side the breeze is cool etc.,

An industrialist had taken a palatial penthouse on rent for a large deposit plus monthly rent.  Entire family and their attachments were shifted and after a few days there was  a small get together at their house in the evening - and all doors were opened and atmosphere was very excellent and every one was appreciating the choice of selection. After an hour there was a commotion and everyone wanted to get in inside the room or wanted to leave the place and get out!  Near by swamp was the breeding place for powerful mosquitoes, they also came along with their kith and kin - Just within 20 minutes the place was empty and the house was vacated next month.

By spending in the house - once the construction is completed - there will be new demands and earlier assumptions will become null and void and entire concept of decorating will change.  That will be the long lasting rather than imagining the space and its requirements.

COLOR

Ask any female shopping addict - she will tell you that she is an expert in choosing right color.   You - in reality - feel the color, sense the color - and color do have its direct impact on you - whether you will agree or not.  The problem comes when some one requests you to describe the color you are seeing or feeling.  You will generalize it, can not pin point!

Whatever we generalize - is our perception - the way we sense - attributes of color. In reality these attributes are working on us to express ourselves colorfully!

The attributes are like say hue, value, and chroma- or may be warm, cool, light and dark, and natural, stark, radiant or dull or mild etc.  What we call attributes can change depending upon our perception as perception depends upon our individual attitude and upbringing, religion and culture etc.

One should understand the color - so we can use them to bring joy to our lives in a better way.  And a designer is an individual who mastered the art of color - as the color can motivate and influence the behavior of people.

You may be in a crisis when you were unable to choose the right color for the right occasion.  You will be at loss to understand or gauge about what color will suit you in summer, or in winter - which can make you really "good looking". Essentially - every fabric will tell you a different story - like every woman can!  As it was said earlier, try and create your own style rather than following others or imitating the visitors.  Because, mind you that you are different from others - in every aspect!

White - Frankly there is no other color like while and ever popular.  And ear it with any other light color or dark color - the performance is excellent.  Color is right - then how you wear it is your choice - to suit your body, color, height and other vital statistics.
White - A gentle and associated with cleanliness, white is being branded as summer color - is perfectly matched in every season with any color and any dress.  Adoptability is the unique nature of White and supporting the other colors is its rare character.  Whether it is blue, gray or bright red or pale yellow - you can choose this when you are in total confusion and still looks good and class.
For centuries - in India, the white is must with white jasmine flowers - for a newly married couple for their first night.   The love, attachment and the freshness as well as the purity are demonstrated vividly in single color - that is white.
The perfect match blue (Navy Blue and White;  Pink and white)  A blue fabric with white flowers - and white fabric with pink or orange flowers - looks beautiful.

Black

The basic and popular color - is Black; Stylish, standard and corporate.
A Black trouser and white shirt is most appropriate and can beat any other mixture of colors in any way.  Black being a natural color gives acceptability to any other color on the top.  I suggested to a traders in Hyderabad that "Burkha" (the shroud or veil the Muslim women wear when they are in the public places) can be fashioned in a different way.  As the customary color of this shroud is mostly black and in some countries it is gray or dark blue - paint a design in white color - it should start at 6 inches above the bottom - of the dress and should go up till the chest and in some places till the shoulders.
And another idea is that mirror work can be carried out instead of painting - by which a sparkle can be created in the night time - when the woman is walking on the road.

A color - can be braded as royal and associated with power and elegance.  Best suited and refined in other dark colors.

Red

RED is a basic color for Fashion - brings visibility and create attraction and excitement.  This color speaks about confidence, energy and vigor - some times sex, vitality and passion.
Red color has got its own different sister colors - like maroon or pink etc., Women who can mix the pure red with its other sister colors - effectively - can create excellence.

Yellow

Yellow - is having different segments and the pure yellow speaks about the divinity and purity, represents young, fun and innocence. Dark yellow generates appeal and stimulation. Unlike the Black and Red color, it is not stark, yet brings attention and calm. Some people say that this color represents the change. Because it is the color of sun shine so the starts with this color and so this color brings the hope.
Yellow with white, yellow with blue and yellow tops and black bottoms will have striking looks - specifically for youth

Blue

Wrongly assessed as representative of Sex and totally opposite to Red and Yellow. Light blue is soothing and dark blue is strong willed. Particularly in day time and in simmers and winters - when black is overdone, blue is best choice.
Innovation and creativity - inspiration and affection, future and performing arts - that is blue. Royalty is one thing mostly attached to the Blue.

Pink

Young, female, moody and comics - Yet - like them - it brings a refreshing calm and soothing atmosphere.  One should wear occasionally to create sensation or clutter in a group - perfectly there is no match except the white - to express the love, appeal and emotion and closeness as well as good mood.

Choosing The Right Filling For You
Natural
Natural filling makes for the longest lasting pillow because it is the most resilient and durable.  Natural fillings include waterfowl (goose or duck down), feather or down/feather combinations.  As a general rule, the more down used, the softer the pillow, and the more feathers used, the firmer the pillow.

Synthetic
With synthetic filling, including fiberfill, density, softness and firmness are determined by the amount of filling used.  Hollow polyester (slick finish) is machine-washable and dryable, and typically more resilient and durable than solid core polyester.  Synthetics are also hypoallergenic and odorless.

Latex Foam
One-piece pincore construction latex foam filling provides medium to firm density.  While the foam itself is not machine-washable, most pillows of this type include a removable cover that can be laundered.  While not as long-lasting as down, latex foam-filled pillows are still very durable with normal care.

Choosing The Right Pillow For Every Sleeper
Size

Pillows come in standard, jumbo, queen, and king sizes.  The jumbo size fits both a standard and a queen size pillowcase.  Choose the size that suits your individual preference.  The amount of support required is determined by a combination of how you sleep and how weight is distributed between your shoulders, head and neck.

Density
Soft (Stomach Sleepers)
If you sleep on your stomach, a soft pillow provides the right amount of cushioning between your head and mattress.   Down and lightly filled polyester make the softest pillows.

Medium (Back Sleepers)
If you sleep on your back, a medium/firm pillow is the best choice for a good night's sleep.   An approximate mix of 50% down/50% feathers or medium filled branded polyester provides medium density.

Firm (Side Sleepers)
If you sleep on your side, you need the support of a firm or extra firm pillow.   Pillows overfilled with either feathers or polyester are the firmest.

The Proper Mattress Pad Offers Protection And Comfort
How to choose your mattress pad
3

Every bed is different.  Before you shop for a mattress pad, measure your bed to assure a proper fit.  Most mattress covers will include the cover's dimensions on the packaging.  The following section includes more helpful information on mattress pads.  Be sure to read it before you shop to find the mattress pad that's right for you.

Why is a mattress pad necessary?
Mattress pads are more than just a protective cover to extend the life of your expensive mattress.   They also keep your mattress clean and dry,  ultimately increasing your comfort for a good night's sleep.  A mattress pad made of 100% cotton will be your best choice,  providing moisture-absorbing characteristics for maximum comfort.  Because mattresses (even pillow-top mattresses) are designed for durability, they use polyester fabrics that are harsh and stiff.  Mattress pads provide a soft layer of comfort between the sleeper and the mattress.  Fitted mattress pads are the most common found today.  By wrapping, around the majority of mattress, fitted pads provides the most protection and comfort, stabilizing your sheets and making it easier to make your bed.

For maximum performance, look for a fitted mattress pad designed to fit mattresses up to 16 inches deep.

How to keep your mattress pad clean
Most mattress pads can be machine-washed and dried.  As always, check your mattress pad's care instructions and follow them carefully.

Feather and fiber beds
Feather and fiber beds are additional layers of comfort on both new and old mattresses.   They also refurbish and enhance sleep sofas, air mattresses and futons.  In channel and baffle constructions, these thick pads cradle the body and relieve pressure points to ensure a good night's sleep.

Caring For The Things You Care About Most
Understanding Care Symbols

Rather than including lengthy written instructions, manufacturers provide care symbols on labels.  The use of these symbols standardizes product labels internationally.  Care labels provide helpful information that can save you time and money.  According to a recent study, four out of five consumers read care labels before they buy clothing and follow label instructions when washing garments.

Your Laundry And Home Appliances
What To Look For In A New Washer
Top-Loading

Fully automatic washers let you pre-select your load size and desired water temperature, which is helpful in laundering delicate fabrics when speed and temperature are crucial.  Top-loading machines are a practical choice because they have higher load capacity.

Front-Loading

Front-loaders, on the other hand, have a greater ability to clean highly soiled items and can provide extra space in your laundry room by allowing you to use the washer top as a work surface.  While generally more expensive, they are usually more energy efficient.

Sorting
The following can be used as a general guideline.  For more specific sorting and water temperature information, refer to the back of your detergent packaging.

  • Sort by color, separating whites from colors and pastels from darks.
  • Wash heavily soiled items separately from those that are only lightly soiled.
  • Separate delicate articles from heavy duty cleaning loads.
  • Wash terry cloth products separately from your sheets or apparel products to prevent lint transference.
  • Before washing, close any zippers, fasten buttons and mend any tears.
  • Always check an item's care label before you select a water temperature.

As a general guideline:

  • Hot:  White cottons
  • Colorfast pastels
  • Light prints
  • Warm: Bright colors
  • Permanent press
  • Delicates
  • Cold: Colors that bleed or fade

INTERNATIONAL COLOR CONSORTIUM

The International Color Consortium was established in 1993 by eight industry vendors for the purpose of creating, promoting and encouraging the standardization and evolution of an open, vendor-neutral, cross-platform color management system architecture and components. The outcome of this co-operation was the development of the ICC profile specification.

The intent of the International Color Consortium (R) profile format is to provide a cross-platform device profile format. Device profiles can be used to translate color data created on one device into another device's native color space. The acceptance of this format by operating system vendors allows end users to transparently move profiles and images with embedded profiles between different operating systems. This permits tremendous flexibility to both users and vendors. For example, it allows users to be sure that their image will retain its color fidelity when moved between systems and applications. Furthermore, it allows a printer manufacturer to create a single profile for multiple operating systems.

Home Furnishing Textiles
Textiles particularly the fabrics which are used for furnishing home comes in variety of qualities.

NATURAL

Cotton: Being the strongest natural fabrics - is a versatile fabric used extensively.  The unique natural quality of this Cotton Fabric is it allows air flow through the fabric. Comes in a wide range of color choices and well suited for curtains, covers, table cloth etc., Cotton gives comfort and enhance the look of elegance.   It is always better to use the mixed ( cotton-synthetic)  fabric for durability and also for more natural colors.

Silk: An adaptable fabric, luxurious and comes in natural shades - to suit certain atmosphere. A fabric natural beauty and stunning appearance - well suited for bedrooms and window curtains. More than the curtains, it is well suited for furnishing - cool, smooth and durable silk has got no substitute.

In the silks - there are printed silks, brocades, and embossed designs - with gold and silver lining -to enhance the look and bring the kind of superiority.  Chiffon is light so it should be combined with cotton; and Italian silk is pure silk, rich in colors - with excellent designs; though expansive, best suited for special occasions.

Satin - is having shining looks and polished finish - but then direct sun rays may damage the color and shine.

Wool: Essentially used in rugs and carpets.  Synonym for warmness wool is most suited for cool climates.

Linen: This is the fabric meant for curtains as well as furnishings -  with its drape fabric is stain resistant. It has a superior sheen, its stain resistant, light, casual and looks natural - suitable for summer.

Velvet: This fabric was in extensive use in ancient days and today it is being looked in a different perspective. Still - if the furniture is good, house is having a royal look and surroundings are pure natural then Velvet - with its bright colors will bring a different environment.

SYNTHETIC

Acrylic: Mixing the natural fiber with synthetic fiber - this fabric can boast about both natural looks and synthetic durability. Durability in a sense that it is washable, stain resistance, fast colors, not an expansive material and unlike cotton or silk - will not react to the sun rays.

Rayon: This fabric is being used very selectively - as the fabric may deteriorate in the most climate.

Nylon: Like Velvet - though stain resistant, quality wise - a low quality item not an expansive one, will add no extra elegance.

Polyester: Cotton, Linen and next comes the Polyester - popular for curtains and furnishings - becasue you can do any thing with this, create excellent designs, comes in variety of colors, and will not fade easily and can be washed easily - with little extra effort.  You can enjoy both cotton luxury and synthetic durability.

Acetate: Placed in first place for its wrinkle proof quality - and with all qualities of Polyester, and best suited for windows, doors and for furnishings.

Home furnishing is all about giving a unique personality to your house, and in other words - in the language of advertising - it's a kind of "branding" of your house. How you decorate, what material you use, what color you select - everything depends upon your liking, creativity and innovative capability.  By  bringing new theme you can create a feel of spaciousness to a room - by changing the window drapes - you can bring airiness environment inside the hall and by changing and selecting the right lights and right place, you will have no shadows and bring ambience into the room.

Using certain color in certain grade or shade - will enhance the elegance and give a different look to the exterior of your house and interior of the rooms and halls. Light and silky textures create wonders - and exact use of right mirrors will create more space for your house.

Where to keep what - is the main criteria on which total aspect of home furnishings is based.  Keep the weighty and large sized furniture - like book cases and storage items - against the wall, and if you have two sets of sofas - create three different discussions areas - of different number of chairs.

The color of the furniture should match the carpet on which they are sitting. Indoor -plants are most convenient pieces to create right atmosphere for ant visiting guests.

Home Textile Information

Whether you're shopping for a plush down comforter, spot cleaning a  bath rug or storing your linens, this is a resource to help you extend the life and beauty of all your special belongings.  Use it before you make your next purchase or whenever you have questions about how to clean or care for your home textiles.
What Goes Into Your Home Textiles
Natural Fibers
Despite the advances of modern technology, Mother Nature still manages to produce basic fibers that simply can't be duplicated by man.  To help you decide which fabrics work best for your home, we've created the following list of commonly used fibers, both natural and synthetic, along with the features and benefits of each.
Cotton
Cotton can be defined as the fiber separated from the seed of the cotton plant.  The term "staple" is used to describe the average length of the fiber.  As a basic rule, the longer the fiber, the better its quality.  For the longest staple length.  look for Pima or Egyptian cottons, which range from 1 5/6 inch to 1 1/2 inches in length.  Cotton has unique characteristics that make it the most luxurious and versatile fiber choice for home textile products.

  • Superior absorbency enables fibers to draw in moisture.
  • High temperature tolerance allows towels and sheets to be sanitized at higher heat levels.
  • High density imparts a heavier, more substantial feel to finished fabrics.
  • Relatively low cost results in reasonable pricing.
  • High wet strength allows towels and sheets to stand up to rough use and last longer.  (The cotton fiber is approximately 30% stronger than wet.)

Wrap Up In The Perfect Towel
What to know before you buy that first towel

When shopping for towels, it's easy to get caught up in color selection.  While finding the perfect color for your bathroom decor is important, there are other factors to consider.  For instance, will the towels you choose retain their colors or quickly fade?  Higher quality products are durable and retain their colorfastness, but that doesn't always mean spending too much money.  Look for quality in brands you trust.

Size is another important consideration.  Typically, buying an assortment of sizes within the same line is the best approach.  Brands today offer a range of sizes to fit every consumer and every need.  Also, towels can serve multiple purposes outside of the bathroom, including wash cloths as picnic napkins, guest towels as place mats, or a tub mat inside the door for wet dogs and small children.

The Drier, The Better

A towel's drying capacity is a function of the yarn absorbency and the density of the terry (number of loops per square inch).  Cotton is the most absorbent fiber for towels.  More loops of cotton per square inch mean a greater surface area to absorb moisture, making you feel drier.  Longer loops also increase the surface area's density.  Weight is misleading, as heavy towels are made with coarse yarns providing fewer loops and less absorbency.  By using finer yarns, manufacturers can weave more loops.  Towels by name brands use the finest 100%  combed cotton, and in some cases, more than a million loops for the ultimate in drying.

How does it feel?

Towel softness is consistently listed as high priority among consumers.  Softness is the result of the fineness of the yarns, combing and ring spinning, and the density or number of loops.  In cheaper towels, fabric softeners are used to compensate for the lack of natural softness.  These chemicals resist moisture, reducing the towel's ability to dry.  Sheared towels are terry towels with the terry loops sheared off on one side.  Since these "velour" type towels are less dense, they don't dry as well.  Their velvet surfaces may be very soft, but absorbency is sacrificed.  For softness and absorbency, look for the combed, ring-spun, 100% cotton loops in towels by famous name brands.

Keeping Your Towels Clean
Cotton or cotton blend towels:
1

These towels are machine washable.  To keep your towels looking new for as long as possible, choose your laundry detergent carefully.  Detergents without optical brighteners are best for keeping towels clean and clear.  Optical brighteners dull fabric over time.

  • White towels can be washed in hot water with detergent.
  • Test colored towels for colorfastness, or follow care label.
  • Wash similar shades together.  Separate lights and darks to avoid color migration.
  • Wash towels separately to avoid lint migration to other fine fabrics.
  • Avoid using fabric softeners or dryer sheets, or only use sparingly as these chemicals reduce the absorbency of towels.

The Perfect Bath Rug's Out There - Here's How To Find It.
What to know before selecting a bath rug

Before you purchase a bath rug, decide what factors are most important to you.  For instance, if your bathroom has tile or linoleum flooring, you'll probably want a bath rug with non-skid backing.  Also, would you be willing to sacrifice softness for a perfect color match?  Or, is size more important than color and design?  Absorbency and durability should also be taken into consideration.

Your Rug's Construction And Features

The way a rug feels is determined by the number of woven rows or gauge (space between the needles).  A finer gauge uses more fiber woven more densely, resulting in a softer finished product.  Some manufacturers use lower gauges with heavier, thicher yarns to make the rug appear more dense, ultimately sacrificing softness and long wear.

Bath rugs are made of either cotton or synthetic fibers.  Cotton is a long lasting, naturally soft fiber that makes an excellent choice for bath rugs.  On the other hand, synthetic fibers combine very easy-care properties with vibrant, lasting colors and absorbency.  Today's advanced fiber manufacturing technology produces a wide range of options from bright, lustrous fibers to soft, luxurious fibers that look and feel like cotton.

How To Keep Your Bath Rug Clean
Always follow the care instructions on your bath rug.  Non-skid backings may be prone to cracking and peeling if washed and dried at high temperatures.  Bleaches or cleaners containing enzymes are not recommended for use in cleaning bath rugs.

Shapes To Choose From:
You'll Rest Easy With The Right Comforter
Things to consider before choosing your comforter

Changing the look of your bed is the most inexpensive way to dramatically alter the look of your bedroom, but there is much more to choosing comforters and accessories than looks alone.  As the name implies, comfort should be a high priority in your decision.  Some factors to consider are softness, thickness and warmth.  Your needs can change seasonally, so you may want several options for your bedding throughout the year.  Comforters are generally available with two types of fill: down or synthetic.  While it is more expensive, down filling provides maximum warmth and lightweight softness.  Synthetics can also be very warm and comfortable and are much easier to care for.  You may also want to consider the purchase of a duvet cover.  This is an easily removable cover for your comforter that protects your investment and allows you to change decorating schemes without replacing your comforter.

The Difference Between Goose And Duck Down
Down comes from the under body of geese and ducks.  Down from geese is considered better quality because the clusters of down are larger and provide a softer feel with greater insulation properties. Duck down also insulates well, but is not quite as soft as goose down.  Down can also be white or gray.  Most consumers prefer white, even through gray down can be of equal quality.

Your Comforter's Shell
Most down comforter shells are made of 100% cotton, allowing down to breathe.  Some more expensive comforters blend cotton with silk or rayon.  The construction of the shell plays an important role in keeping the down evenly distributed.  Baffled wall construction helps keep the down from moving inside the comforter.  The baffles also allow the down to maintain its loft inside the shell.  This loft helps the down trap air within the shell to keep the heat inside.

Thread Count
Thread count is also important to the quality of any comforter.  The best fabric construction for a comforter is a tightly woven, high thread count weave in which the yarns are interlaced with one another to create a fine cloth.  It is important that the thread count be at least 230 to ensure that small fibers or feathers do not escape.

Fill Weight
Down comforters come in a number of fill weights.   In general, fill weights for a twin/queen/king of 30/40/50 ounces are considered medium to heavy.  Lightweight comforters are often better for summer months.

Find The Perfect Fit For Your Bed
Many comforters do not fit some thicker mattresses.  Over sized comforters by famous name brands meet the needs of today's larger mattresses with an extra four inches in width and six inches in length, plus ten ounces of fiberfill for additional loftiness, comfort and warmth.

When shopping for a comforter, you'll find many options.  You can choose from bonded fiber fills, channels and quilt patterns.  Also, reversible comforters can add flexibility to your bedroom decor.  A comforter cover or duvet cover is not only decorative but also protects the comforters from soil and wear.  While shopping, be sure to inspect both the face and backing fabrics to find the look and texture that's right for you.  Some comforters come with accessory options.  In choosing a bed skirt, make sure that corners are split to allow the fabric to flow easily around bedposts.  Check pillow shams for closings with a large overlap so plump pillows won't show through gaps.  You may also want to accessorize with neck rolls and tailored pillows to complete the decor.

Keeping Your Comforter Clean
Most down comforters need to be dry cleaned for maximum life and performance.  Follow the care label instructions exactly for best results.  For synthetic comforters, laundering needs vary greatly, depending upon surface fabric and fill materials.  The bulk of comforters especially when wet, can tax some machines.  Be sure not to overload your washer or dryer.  If overloaded, the spin and dry cycles are less efficient and results are less than satisfactory.  You may need to use a commercial washer with a larger capacity.  Read your machine manuals for specific instructions.

Storage
Store down comforters only after proper cleaning.  Before folding for storage, shake the comforter to fluff it.  To retain maximum loft in your comforter, fold it only as many times as is absolutely necessary for your amount of storage space.  For both down and synthetic comforters, loosely wrap in plastic, forming a tight seal where the plastic meets.  Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and avoid stacking other items on top.

The Search For Softer Sheets
Before you make your bed
Sheets come in many colors and designs to complement your bedroom decor, but there are several important factors to consider before purchasing your new sheets.   Take a moment to consider what feels best to you.  Do you seek softness or a crisper feel?  Look for packaging that permits you to feel the fabric before you make a purchase.  Whether you choose the highest thread count in 100% cotton, or a soft, practical blend, you're assured of the highest quality when you choose any famous name brand.

When choosing fitted sheets, elastic that runs around the entire sheet (rather than only at the corners) ensures a better fit and helps prevent corners from "popping" off the mattress hem.  Look for packaging that states the maximum mattress height the sheet will fit.  Flat sheets should have either sewn or strong selvages on each side to prevent unraveling and to ensure a longer lide and better wear.  Also, look for a wide variety of colors that allow you to change the look of your bed instantly.

What About Thread Count?
In general, the higher the thread count, the smoother and softer the surface of the fabric.  Although higher thread count sheets tend to be more expensive, a higher thread count extends the life of the fabric, saving money in the long run because your sheets will last longer.  Compare prices while you shop to find the highest thread count you can afford.

The Benefits Of Blended Fabrics
Although 100% cotton provides the softest finish, it also wrinkles more easily and requires the most care.  Blended fabrics of cotton and polyester have the benefits of easier care and also tend to be slightly less expensive.

How To Keep Your New Sheets Clean
Laundering requirements will vary greatly depending upon the fabric and colors you choose.  Follow the care label instructions for the best results.  Remember to wash your sheets before using them the first time to remove the finishes and odors sometimes associated with manufacturing.

Storing Your Sheets
Before storing your sheets, be sure that they are laundered and folded properly so they will be ready for use when you need them.  Higher quality sheets are often sold in resealable packages for convenient storage.  Always store your sheets in a cool, dry place away from direct light sources.

Folding Your Fitted Sheets
To create a neat fold for storage, follow these simple steps:

  • Holding your right hand behind the right pocket at the top of the sheet, insert the left pocket inside with your left hand.  Repeat this procedure at the bottom of the sheet.
  • Smooth the sheet, folding it lengthwise again.
  • Fold the sheet up from the bottom several times to achieve a bundle approximately 12" wide and 10" high.

When It Comes To Pillows, Everyone's Different
Buying the best pillow for you
Although many people don't replace their pillows on a regular basis, a worn pillow can lead to uncomfortable nights followed by neck or back pain.  The following section will help you determine when to replace your pillows and what to look for in choosing new ones.

When To Buy New Pillows
2

When a pillow becomes flat or loses its bounce and resiliency, it's time to replace it.  Pillows flatten when they lose the ability to trap air.  Resiliency in a pillow is the ability to recover its size and shape.  A simple test to see if you need a new pillow is to fold your old one over.  If it doesn't bounce back, it's time to buy a new one.  Higher quality pillows have more resilient fills.  Density in a pillow is the degree of softness or firmness, depending upon the type and amount of fill.  Down is softer and more luxurious than feathers.  Feathers make a firmer pillow.  The density of a synthetic fiberfill depends on the amount and type of fiberfill used in the pillow.  If you have an allergy problem, synthetic fiberfill or polyurethane foam is hypoallergenic.

The Life Of Your Pillow
Natural feather and down pillows will last the longest, but polyurethane foam also has a long life span.  In synthetics, silicone treated polyester or fiberfill pillows are more resilient, durable and machine washable than non-treated polyester fibers.  To help your pillow last as long as possible, it should be fluffed each time the bed is made.  For best results,  optimum comfort and hygiene, all pillows should be replaced every two to three years.

Keeping Your Pillow Clean
Most natural filling pillows must be dry cleaned.   To freshen your pillow, leave it out on a dry day to air it out.  For extended wear and to protect against allergies, use a removable, washable pillow cover.  Most good quality synthetic-filled pillows are washable and dryable.  In fact, try fluffing up your pillows by tossing them in the dryer for twenty minutes.  This should reloft your pillow and freshen it up.
